Review of Bulldog X-Large Deluxe Black Range Bag with Pistol Rug
Bulldog Cases only does one thing. They make cases and range bags for weapons. They’ve been doing it for more than a decade, and as you might suspect, they’ve gotten incredibly good at it. There’s something to be said for such laser-like focus, and it shows in their products. Their commitment to excellence in terms of research, construction, price and customer service makes them a diamond in the rough for range bag buyers. You can buy their range bag in different sizes, X-Large Deluxe, Deluxe, Economy, and Shooters Bag. Generally they are all made similarly, except for the dimensions of each. For our purposes today, we’re going take a look at the XL Deluxe Bulldog range bag, one of the best values for the money in terms of entry level pistol range bags.
Bulldog X-Large Deluxe Black Range Bag with Pistol Rug
The bag itself is 15″ (length) x 10″ (width) x 9″ (height), with main compartment being a spacious 15” L x 6.5″ W. This means you’ll have plenty of room for one gun, ammo, magazines, and extras like a cleaning kit, extra safety goggles, and the like. Note that the bag does come with one gun rug. Many have been able to fit a second gun inside with ease, but do wish it was 3-4” longer.
That being said there is still room for plenty of ammo for both firearms and extras, but given the bag’s dimensions, it’s a tight squeeze. If you don’t mind cramming everything in, you can get two guns and all their accessories into the bag. Many have reported being able to fit a third pistol inside if you pack it correctly. (If you’re looking to find a bag that stores 4 pistols, you may want to take a look at the Glock 4 pistol range bag review).
Still, for a single gun and all the extras you’d care to bring, it’s fantastically roomy. The 2 outer compartments on each side of the bag are 13″ in length. There is no designed space for mag holders but the bag can easily carry them inside.
Two things here stand out where durability is concerned. One is the tough nylon construction with top notch heavy stitching. It’s made to stand up to regular, sustained use, so it can take a beating. The second, and every bit as important is the fact that the range bag is water resistant. That’s key, because not all ranges are indoors. It contains deluxe padding to keep your firearms protected and the interior safe as well. All in all, it’s a rugged bag that can take whatever you can throw at it.
The two biggest extras that will draw your eye in this bag are the shoulder strap and the three “secret” compartments tucked away inside the main compartment. The shoulder strap doesn’t make this an actual range backpack, but it comes reasonably close, and this is really what provides the bag’s versatility. You can carry it with the handles, down at your side, or you can sling it over your shoulder, whichever is more comfortable for you. Be warned though that some customers have complained that the buckles used to fasten the shoulder strap can become unbuckled easily, causing it to fall from your shoulder unexpectedly. Note, however, this was an issue only for a very small percentage of customers.
As to the secret compartments, while they don’t serve many truly “secret” purposes, they are good for storing smaller, more fragile items in with your guns, ammo, and equipment. A good place to stash your cleaning kit, or maybe your phone if you need somewhere to put it while you’re actually on the range. These 3 Velcro pockets sit alongside the inside walls and 2 of them are 6.5″ in length while the other is 6″ in length.
One final note here about extras and flexibility is that all zippers are lockable. That’s a great safety feature if you’ve got small children around or if you need to leave your bag unattended for brief periods.
What Customers Are Saying – Over 93% of the customers who own this bag have rated it with 4 or 5 stars, while less than 5% have rated it with 1 or 2 stars. Many have reported that lockable zippers are a great security feature, plus the ability to store just about any accessory in the bag when you carry one pistol inside. The biggest customer complaint is that the shoulder strap can unhinge causing the bag to fall from your shoulder. This must be checked in advance of your outing.
Roomy, rugged, and versatile. Those are the three best words to sum up this product. If it’s not the very best range bag in its class, then it’s very, very close. A really superb product and a great value for the money.
